An absolute must-do when visiting New England National Park, with some of the most spectacular views from the edge of the escarpment, 1,500 metres above sea level.
This heavily trafficked walk starts from the Point Lookout picnic area car park, at the end of Point Lookout Road.
While short, the walk packs a punch, winding down to the lookout through lush rainforest and moss covered fallen trees and rocks, which creates a magical atmosphere.
Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, which are plentiful in the area.
The views from the lookout are truly breathtaking. Situated high on the edge of the Great Escarpment – 1,563 metres above sea level – you can’t help but be in awe at the 180-degree panoramic view.
Look across World Heritage rainforest and layers of ranges to the Pacific Ocean some 70 kilometres away.
The track is paved the entire way, with the walk to the first lookout flat and wheelchair accessible and suitable for families with strollers.
There is also an additional lookout further along the track, accessed via a small number of stairs, before the track loops back around to the car park.
New England National Park can be visited as part of the 185 km Waterfall Way scenic drive from Coffs Harbour to Armidale.
Track: The track is sealed and paved, with the walk to the first lookout flat and wheelchair accessible and suitable for families with strollers. The track is well-signed and easy to follow.
Difficulty: The track is suitable for all walkers, with the main lookout being wheelchair accessible.
Direction: This is a loop track that is best completed in an anti-clockwise direction.
getting there
The trail starts from the Point Lookout picnic area car park, at the end of Point Lookout Road in Ebor – approximately 5.25 hours drive south of Brisbane, 1 hour drive east of Armidale, 2 hours drive west of Coffs Harbour or 6.5 hours drive north of Sydney.
Parking is ample but can get busy during peak periods.

The walk can be completed year-round.
